It's warm today, but, September in Idaho is a great time to get your home ready for colder weather. A few simple preventative steps now can help avoid expensive water, fire, and property damage later. *Disconnect Your Garden Hoses & Blow Out Your Sprinklers This is an easy one to forget! Before freezing temperatures arrive, unscrew garden hoses from your outdoor faucets. Leaving a hose connected can trap water inside the faucet and plumbing. When that water freezes and expands, it can cause a pipe to crack or burst—sometimes inside the wall where you won't notice it until there's significant water damage.
Be sure to blowout your sprinklers while you are at it! *Clean Your Gutters Leaves and debris can prevent water and melting snow from draining properly. Clean gutters and downspouts and make sure water is directed away from your foundation. *Check Your Furnace & Fireplace Before turning up the heat, replace furnace filters and have fireplaces or wood-burning stoves inspected and cleaned when needed. It's also a good time to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. *Take a Quick Look at Your Roof Look for missing or damaged shingles before snow arrives. A small roof problem in September can turn into a much bigger problem after a winter of snow, ice, and wind. *Know Where Your Water Shutoff Is If a pipe ever bursts, knowing how to quickly shut off your home's water can make a huge difference in the amount of damage. A little fall maintenance can prevent a big insurance claim. At Infanger Insurance, we'd much rather help our customers prevent a claim than have to file one. Take a few minutes this fall to prepare your home—and don't forget those hoses! Need a quote? See https://www.infangerinsurance.com/home-insurance-quote.html Infanger Insurance Inc.
