Injuries to Avoid in the Kitchen When Working as a Cook

​Kitchens are where hazards usually occur. Falling pans, boiling liquids, and knives are among the risk factors that chefs have to be careful of the everyday. Take note of these injuries that chefs experience to improve kitchen safety.

1. Cuts
   Cuts are the most common injuries that chefs suffer. Worst-case scenarios are those that undergo surgery for amputation after severe lacerations. The kitchen holds the most dangerous equipment in the restaurant since this is where knives, graters, slicing machines, and cleavers are found. Although chefs are trained to use the mentioned equipment and practice safety precautions, accidents can still happen. 
   
   Always return knives after you’ve used them. Having a clean and neat work area is encouraged to avoid sharp objects from falling off countertops.
   
   
2. Back Pain
   Plenty of chefs experience back pain due to standing for long hours, leaning on countertops and stoves when cooking, and lifting heavy objects. These activities create a strain on your back and prolonging these can cause chronic back pain. Which means you’ll be experiencing pain that may last days or weeks. To reduce back strain, avoid staying put in one position for an extended time.
   
   If you’re usually on counter duty for hours with your spine bent forward and your head looking down, stretch your back for a minute or two every thirty minutes. It helps relieve the stress on your back. Also, people differ in height. Don’t hesitate to use a step stool if a kitchen cupboard is too high for you.
   
   
3. Burns
   Aside from cuts and back pains, burns come in third. Frequently working in the kitchen means always being exposed to heat and fire. You are continuously working around open flames, boiling water, and falling pans, making you prone to scalds and burns. If you are not cautious enough, you will get burnt. Some cases are severe enough that chefs have to request a few days off for recovery.
   
   
4. Chef’s Foot
   Otherwise known as Hallux Rigidus, Chef’s Foot is arthritis in the big toe. If your feet are always stressed from working in long hours without rest, the cartilage on your foot is prone to thinning, leading to joint inflammation (arthritis). To avoid conditions like this, make sure to wear the appropriate shoes. There are shoes designed explicitly for chefs that support various areas around the foot and thus reducing the tendency of developing certain conditions.
