When the rainy season comes in, flooding will probably follow. If it happens in your home, it can damage most of your properties, such as expensive possessions, appliances, and essential documents. While you can’t stop floods from happening, there are many ways to prevent or minimize damage. Be Updated and Aware of Latest News
If the rain downpour starts getting heavy and you are growing more worried about the flood, make sure to watch the news for weather forecasts. The more you are aware of the situation and the possibility of flooding, the better you can prepare for it. While you still can, take a quick trip to the grocery and hardware store. Get all the food you will need and some sandbags that can keep water away from your doors. You should also have your emergency kit ready with all the necessities, essential documents, and emergency numbers. You can also help your neighbors by informing them about the situation. Check Your Basement and Raise Electrical Appliances Thoroughly check your home if there are switches, sockets, or wirings than must be moved or cut off for a while. Make sure that all electric appliances and equipment are placed at least one foot above the flood level. You also have the option to waterproof your devices by covering them in waterproof tarps. Basements usually take the most damage when the flood starts. To prevent much damage, make sure that the ground is sloping away from the building’s base. If the rain or flood does not drain, the moisture can weaken the foundation of your basement. It can even grow molds because of the humidity. Check if the drainage and plumbing system of your home is well-kept. Remember to seal all openings and cracks in the walls. Clear Your Gutters Make it a habit to check the gutter of your home’s roof and other drainage canals within. Keep them free of debris and leaves that can cause them to clog and damage the foundation of your home. If you want to make sure that your gutter is working correctly, run a hose down to wash it and check if it drains water properly. Even with all these tips, some damages are still hard to prevent.
